From The CriticsReviewer: Randy L Calisoff, MD (Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago)
Description: This is an update of a comprehensive review of injection-based procedures and noninvasive therapies for pain that can be used in both office and procedural settings. The previous edition was published in 2000.
Purpose: The purpose is to impart the latest information, research, and techniques related to the diagnosis and treatment of pain conditions. This edition was necessary to update practitioners on the latest advances.
Audience: The intended audience is practitioners in the field of pain management who want to be up to date on the latest diagnostic approaches and treatments. The book is appropriate for pain management practitioners who use office-based injections, procedural suite injections, and noninvasive pain management approaches to treat their patients.
Features: Pain practitioners who read this book will learn about the latest advances in both interventional and noninterventional management of complex pain conditions, including complementary and alternative approaches (i.e. acupuncture, prolotherapy, osteopathic manipulative medicine, and herbal/nutritional supplementation). Chapters are logically organized in an easy-to-understand format. Clear pictures detail the anatomy along with the structures being targeted for interventional approaches. Chapters in the section on physical modalities have great pictures of each of the approaches, not only providing readers with information relevant to the technique, but also solidifying the information. All topics are covered very well, and each is backed by evidence-based literature and studies. The detailed index offers a quick way for practitioners to locate a needed section.
Assessment: This is a high quality book for pain practitioners who need a comprehensive guide to interventional, noninterventional, and alternative therapies. What sets this book apart from others on pain procedures are the videos available on the associated website that help readers visualize injection-based approaches. This third edition is definitely justified.
