Overview

Max and Tyler have been paintball partners for a long time when they realize that something's strange at the paintball field. A new player in town, Ryan, has just started playing and winning. At first, Max chalks it up to beginner's luck. But then he starts to notice weird things about Ryan and his team: They always use the same yellow paintballs, for example, even though each team is supposed to get a new color each match. And the marks the paintballs leave behind don't match up to the number of times the players shoot. Can Max and Tyler figure out what's going on before the biggest tournament of the year?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Gail C. Krause
Max and his best friend, Tyler, loved to play paintball. They made a good team, and Max rarely got tagged. One day while playing a new kid named Ryan, Max was tagged mysteriously. He saw the barrel of Ryan's marker, and it wasn't aimed at his hiding place. Max became suspicious of Ryan so he observed him play other games. Max was sure multiple paintballs projected from Ryan's marker. When he tried to report his suspicions, the manager of the playing field feared Max was a sore loser. The ultimate challenge was announced and Max wanted to face Ryan in the championship game. He and Tyler got a team together and Max investigated specialized paintball equipment on the Internet. He found a company that sold triple-blast paintballs, releasing three in one shot. He printed out the information and gave it to the manager. During the championship game Max found himself hiding in Ryan's team's bunker, and there he found an empty box of the triple-blast balls. He saved the empty carton for proof. Max and Tyler's game plan to trick Ryan went well, and while Tyler acted as a decoy, Ryan tagged him, thus revealing his hiding spot. The ending is as expected.

I have a second grade son who can read, but can never seem to find anything that interests him that is at his level of reading. Jake Maddox hit the nail on the head. Not only did my son like the subject, he was also able to read this book with a great combination of familiar words and words that were a little more challenging for him. He read this book independantly in 2 days and can't wait to get more.
