School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 4 Up-A thorough guide that covers materials, techniques, and suggested projects for painting and drawing. Martin explains how to look at common objects as a series of geometric shapes, and explores perspective in drawing buildings and the horizon level in sketching landscapes. Tearing paper for a collage and painting with texture, e.g., sponging and blotting, are also described. Other highlights are the explanations of types of watercolor paper and the effects of paint on them; the differences in sizes of brushes and their potential uses; and how watercolor, tempera, and poster paints create varying effects. Colorful photos and examples enhance the text. Suggestions abound, such as combining crayons and paints or using crosshatching or dotting techniques. Throughout, the author encourages young artists to sample different ways of using common drawing materials, and then to compare and select the mediums they like best. Words in the glossary are clearly defined, although a few terms such as ragging and pointillism are not included. All in all, this is a fine addition.-Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, VA
