Gr 9 Up-This up-to-date title provides an excellent, detailed look at the nation's geography, history, politics since independence in 1947, everyday life, culture, and current challenges. The absorbing, clearly written text is bolstered by lengthy sidebars that usually spotlight individuals or geographic features. However, the overly simple maps are marred by typographical errors ("Preshawar" and "Adninistration") and fail to include important places mentioned in the text. The literacy rates given on the facts page are actually the illiteracy rates, and the date given in the chronology for the founding of the Mogul Empire is off by 100 years. Despite these minor flaws, the depth of information, open format, and numerous black-and-white photographs make this a wise choice for reports. It is far more detailed and presents a more realistic picture of the country than John Caldwell's Pakistan (Chelsea, 1999).-Diane S.
