Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Pal is a small pony who lives at the Star Ranch. Preparations for a rodeo are underway and Pal is feeling a bit left out. He cannot race as fast as the bigger horses, nor pull a big wagon load of hay. He cannot buck and throw off a rider; he just ends up on the ground himself. Then a young girl spots Pal and she is offered a ride. Pal is the perfect horse for this activity and soon all the kids are clamoring for rides. Suddenly Pal is really a star. The illustrations are delightful and kids who love horses and dream of life on a ranch will delight in this simple story. A Level 2 book in the "Penguin Young Readers" series. Also designated as Guided Reading Level "G," this transitional reader offers simple dialogue, picture and content clues, and contains a note to parents and teachers on the opening page. PreS-Gr 1Pal, a friendly little pony, finds his niche on the Star Ranch and becomes a star in his own right. This simple story is written for children at the earliest stages of independent reading. Boys and girls will want to read about the different horses taking part in the rodeo and will identify with little Pal's attempts to do what the bigger horses do. Ogden's soft-focus watercolors fill each page and provide visual clues to the action and vocabulary. The large print makes it easy for new readers to focus on the text.Maura Bresnahan, Topsfield Town Library, MA

This was probably the first 'real' book my book-phobic struggling reader handled on her own. There is enough repetition to make her feel successful, the pictures are beautiful, and the story itself is adorable.
