Overview

The Republic of Palau in the Caroline Islands has a traditional medical system developed over many generations. The Palau Primary Health Care Manual compiles traditional ethnomedical information about plants and presents it within the context of Western Medicine. Many common health conditions are discussed in this book, including those specific to Palauan culture. The book is divided into chapters that discuss plant therapies used in traditional medical care including preventive medicine, chronic disease, bites and stings, diarrhea and gastrointestinal disorders, skin disorders, cuts, wounds, and broken bones, stress, pain, women's health, men's health, colds and flu, and ear, nose, and throat. Also provided is scientific information about each species including efficacy, pharmacology, and potential toxicity, where known. It is intended as an educational manual for Palau and the Pacific region, an area where traditional medicine and some of the plants used in its practice, are endangered resources. Based on extensive on-island research and a comprehensive review of the literature, the book has been produced by a group of Palauan and international experts, specialists in ethnomedicine, clinical care, public health, biology, conservation, and Pacific Island culture.

Meet the Author

Stephen M. Dahmer, M.D., is a board-certified family physician whose passion for health and healing has taken him around the globe. Dr. Dahmer has practiced medicine in diverse settings including: Umbanda terreiros in the heart of Brazil's second largest slum; Maori clinics in Whanganui, New Zealand; rural clinics in Cuba and Dominican Republic; with war veterans at the San Diego Veterans Hospital; and as a hospitalist physician on the Navajo (Diné) reservation in Chinle, Arizona. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison Medical School, completed his residency training at the Beth Israel Residency in Urban Family Medicine in New York City, and was one of the earliest graduates of the Integrative Family Medicine Fellowship at the University of Arizona. Dr. Dahmer is currently Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family and Social Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and practices at the Center for Health and Healing caring for families in New York City.

Michael J. Balick, Ph.D., is a specialist in ethnomedical practices and the use of plants in traditional healing, who has spent more than a decade in Micronesia engaged in ethnobotanical studies. He has also studied the distribution, diversity and traditional uses of plants in the Amazon Valley, Belize, Central America, Asia, the Middle East, and in New York City. He is Philecology Curator and Director of the Institute of Economic Botany and Vice President for Botanical Science at The New York Botanical Garden. He received a Ph.D. and A.M. degrees in Biology from Harvard University.
