Overview

The debut record from Pittsburgh's New Invisible Joy is remarkably assured and confident, a slice of Brit-rock far removed from what most American rock bands were pursuing at this time. John Schisler's soaring, theatric vocals are clearly the focal point of most of these songs, but the other members more than hold their own, Mike Gaydos' resounding guitar work being particularly integral to the band's sound. Pale Blue Day for the most part eschews refrains and hummable riffs in favor of clamorous atmosphere, with striking results on "New Orleans," "Edge of September," and the remonstrative "Goldwish." Occasionally the seeming desire for a Wall of Sound gets the best of them, as on the somewhat cluttered "Ms. Universe," but Pale Blue Day is nevertheless an astonishingly focused and adept effort for an indie debut and suggests major things to come for New Invisible Joy. ~ Joseph McCombs
