Overview

178 stunning color and b/w photos present mid-century modern architecture clustered, perhaps in its highest concentration, in Palm Springs, California. The desert environment and Hollywood stars inspired architects of the day to creative heights, including Donald Wexler, E. Stewart Williams, William Krisel, Albert Frey, William F. Cody, and Richard Neutra. See the Frey House II, Kaufmann House, "House of Tomorrow," and many more. Distinctive architectural features include carports, stone and perforated walls, chalet entrances, extra large driveways, walls of glass, indoor/outdoor spaces, deep overhangs and peaked, butterfly, and L-shaped roofs. For all who are passionate about architecture, this book will be a treasure.

Clearly this author knows very little about the subject. The house shown on the cover has ruined windows, added french doors, a coach light lamp, a colonial, Home Depot garage door in place of the carport and shutters in the clerestories. If thats the star of the book I'd be scared to see the inside.

If you are looking for a book with street level views of houses, this is for you. I had hoped there were interior views of the homes, but this book is as if the photographer just drove around the city and took photos from the street. There is one shot of a pool but otherwise nothing you can't see on a drive around town.

Stunning photos of Mid 20Th Century Palm Springs/ Southern California Architecture. I love the 50's and 60's and I "LOVE" this book. Not a read, mostly photos. Enjoy it.
