Samuel Richardson (1689-1761) was an English printer, publisher, and writer. A contemporary and rival of Henry Fielding, Richardson was a printer and publisher for much of his life, but closed down his business after the death of his five sons, leaving no male heir to take it over. He turned to writing epistolary novels and became famous in short order. He is best known for CLARISSA HARLOWE, PAMELA, and THE HISTORY OF SIR CHARLES GRANDISON.
PAMELA, OR VIRTUE REWARDED describes the sufferings, trials, and vicissitudes undergone by a poor, but beautiful and innocent, country girl who enters the service of a rich gentleman.
