If you want eclectic, this album almost defines the word. Take one Galician singer-guitarist, add a Sardinian chanteuse, mandolin player, and saxophonist, and songs in at least five different languages, and you start to get the picture. The two voices work wonderfully together on the entire disc, although they both like to be a little overblown at times. The songs are carefully arranged, underpinned by Latin American percussion, and with horn charts that suggest jazz -- a feeling underlined when Antonio Placer begins to scat on "Don Gose." Trying to pigeonhole this disc is impossible, with its Gallic accordions rubbing against flamenco influence. And that works to its detriment, as well as its advantage, because it's difficult to get a handle on what Placer is doing, making the record a decidedly acquired taste. But the result is well worth the effort.
