Overview

This gorgeous picture book postulates that, just like us, creatures throughout the world dream sweet dreams. What, then, might a panda whisper to her cub when he's settling down to sleep? “Dream of climbing.” We move from treetops to ocean to plains to river to listen to the gentle murmurs of other animal parents: a dolphin, a cheetah, an otter, and many more. Alongside stunning close-up images of sleepy pairings, we see young animals' dreams of leaping, racing, sliding, swooping, and other kinds of active fun. The final image of a father tucking in his daughter with loving whispers will inspire listeners to sail off into their own dreams.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Carly Reagan
As parents all across the animal kingdom rock their young ones to sleep, their loving whispers encourage them to dream big and show us that parental love is the same for all species. Beginning with a father (of the human variety) rocking his daughter to sleep by the gentle breeze of the ocean, we visit many animals in their own habitats doing the very same thing. Watching animal families—from pandas to penguins, lemurs to llamas—giving words of encouragement, such as "dream of climbing" and "top of the world," is a quiet, sweet way to lull your own little one to sleep. The author paints a beautiful story with words, accompanied by her own stunning illustrations that complement the feeling of the book perfectly with their dream-like style. Perfect for any bedtime or nap-time ritual, as the steady rhythm and rhyme of the words and quiet animal whispers invoke a calm, heavy-lidded sensation. This book is a touching reminder of the parental love that exists throughout the world. Reviewer: Carly Reagan
Kirkus Reviews
A nature bedtime story of the pretty but sappy variety. A little girl in pajamas sits in her dad's lap while he reads this very book to her. Each double-paged opening lushly illustrates an animal and its young-panda, dolphin, fox, alligator-whose facial features are ever so slightly anthropomorphized. The rhymed text, in rather clunky quatrains, describes the scene: "Snug within a cozy nest, / restless mice are settling down, / dreaming of the tasty seeds / and hidden berries to be found." Each verse is followed by an exhortatory line from the parent to the offspring: "Field Mouse whispers, "You'll help find them." The panda whispers, "Dream of climbing" and the cheetah, "Fast as lightning." At the end, the girl is tucked in bed with her father's wish for dreaming and her toy panda at her side. Obviously, despite-or because of-its overly sentimental style, this will find a wide audience among the fans of Mem Fox and Jane Dyer's much better, much prettier, Time for Bed (1993).
