Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kristin Harris
Giant pandas are one of the rarest animals on earth. Today only 1600 live in six isolated regions in China. Pandas are mammals, but unlike some mammals, they like to live in cold mountain habitats. Like other mammals they need to maintain a constant body temperature. Red pandas use their long bushy tails like a blanket. They also have thick fur around their toes and footpads to keep ice from forming on their paws. Red Pandas are one of the smallest bear species and unlike most bears; they do not usually eat meat. Giant Pandas (about the size of the American Black Bear) also prefer to eat mostly plants and bamboo in particular. They can spend up to sixteen hours a day just eating bamboo. They are solitary animals preferring to live alone except at mating season. Pandas are considered a natural treasure in China and have been given as gifts. The first panda to come to the United States was in 1937. Historically it has been difficult to keep baby pandas born in captivity alive, but research and effort have improved panda babies' chances of survival. Although the number of wild pandas has increased a little, they are still endangered. The book is well illustrated with large, informative photographs of pandas in their native habitat and in captivity. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
From the Publisher
At first glance, these books appear to be for a young audience. However, by page 10, they get a lot meatier in tone and content. Each one offers a population map and an array of interesting facts. Photography is large and beautiful-a real draw.
