Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jeffrey Rado, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book provides an accessible review, written by knowledgeable authors, of the symptoms, epidemiology, risk factors, and treatment options of panic disorder. This book updates the first edition published m 1996.
Purpose: The purpose is to explain the causes, symptoms and treatment of panic disorder, using a clear writing style that is accessible to the lay public.
Audience: The book is intended for sufferers of panic disorder, their families and their healthcare providers. It is accessible to all knowledge levels and backgrounds. Some readers with an extensive background in psychiatry may find it rather basic.
Features: The authors detail, in a clear and concise manner, the clinical experience of panic. A nice overview is given of various clinical scenarios. Etiology is discussed, but the biological theories are not expanded upon in any great detail. Extra attention is spent on cognitive behavioral therapy, setting up psychotherapy, and the use of assessment methods. Fewer pages are devoted to pharmacotherapy. Multiple case vignettes are nicely deployed to illustrate concepts.
Assessment: This guide is very easy to read and provides the basics about panic disorder for the novice reader. It is a great starting point for learning more about a fairly common disorder. Practicing psychiatrists may find little new information in this edition, however. Rather, this would be a book clinicians can recommend to their patients who want to learn more about their illness.

"The information is matter-of-fact and easy to grasp; reading the book may require some interest but no high level of education and certainly no psychological or medical knowledge."--Behaviour Research
