Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Selected papers from two conferences on preservation and sustainable development in the Pantanal, held in Washington, D.C. in 1999. The Pantanal, 60,000 square miles of wetlands straddling Brazil, Bolivia, and Paraguay, is home to an extraordinary concentration and variety of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, and plants; it faces serious challenges as development and population growth accelerate in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. Papers in this collection grapple with the fundamental issues related to balancing conservation and development in the region. The contributors are researchers, administrators, legislators, and academics from a range of disciplines, organizations, and nations. The book has no index. Annotation c.
