Rich, colorful and bursting with excitment, this remarkable story turns James Alexander Thom's power and passion for American history to the epic story of Tecumseh's life and give us a heart-thumping novel of one man's magnificent destiny--to unite his people in the struggle to save their land and their way of life from the relentless press of the white settlers.

Tecumseh's name referred to the shooting star under which he was born and means "Panther in the Sky." And indeed during his lifetime he defended his Shawnee people with the cunning of a cat. This bestselling epic of a legendary Native American chief and warrior is now being reissued to coincide with the new TV movie Tecumseh.

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
``What particularly distinguishes this splendidly vigorous and imaginative recreation of the life of the great Shawnee chief Tecumseh (1768-1813) is its bid to capture the spirit of Midwestern Indian culture from within,'' commented PW. (Mar.)
Library Journal
Thom's previous books, published in trade paperback, all dealt with Americans fighting for independence in the Ohio River area and their experiences with the Indians in the late 1700s. Now come the Indians themselves, with this hardcover novel of Tecumseh (1768-1813). Tecumseh was born under a shooting star, a portent of greatness. His father and older brothers died fighting white encroachment onto Indian lands, and he became the leader of younger and more dissident elements of many tribes in order to fight white seizure of their lands. The basic facts of this warrior's life are all here, but Thom states he ``was looking especially for insights into the culture, morality, ceremony, and psychic condition of the Shawnee people in the time of their greatest crisis.'' He seems to have found them, as the characters are alive and believable. Overlong but well done.-- Andrea Lee Shuey, Dallas P.L.

Here through a small tunnel a apprentice and mentor can pass, at the other side is a clearing that is hiden with ivy, braken, and thorn vines. It is well protected and a perfect training spot.~Pantherstar

The Best Book I've Ever Read!

I first read this book when I was in the eighth grade in 1993. I read it three times that year. I was an immediate fan. Panther in the Sky has remained my favorite book all these years. I have yet to find one that even comes close to the enjoyment I got from this book! It truly is the best book I've ever read.

    Review from Kentucky

This was the first book by James Alexander Thom I read. I am hooked. This guy is absolutely one of the best story tellers of our time. He takes you right to the heart of the story and doesn't miss a beat. He is the master of mixing historical fact with a bit of fiction to create a very accurate historical novel.<BR/>I have read all of his books. Everything he writes is a must read.

    A review from Chillicothe

Panther in the Sky is not only a fabulous, enthralling read, but as historically accurate as it gets. As a resident of Chillicothe I have attended our outdoor drama 'Tecumseh!' many times and I must say this book far better relays the character and integrity of the Native American people. You will truly learn from this read. Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Thom!

    more from this reviewer

    Recommend with reservations

I enjoyed the book overall but felt the author described too many battles that went on and on. Got rather boring. One battle seemed the same as the next. Found myself speed-reading through most of them. I liked the main story of Tecumseh and enjoyed the characters. I felt I got my money's worth because of the length of the book. We Americans need to feel ashamed at the way we treated the Indians and devastated their families and their land. Hope we learned some valuable lessons.

    highly recommend!

Excellant read on a very important person in American history. Almost prolonged the course of American expansion westward in the 1800's.
