Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Zalben’s books are not all sugar and spice. In each story the family celebrates the holidays while experiencing routine family dramas like sibling rivalry, anxiety, about being in a class play or the comical outcome of children’s first attempts at cooking." —Publishers Weekly

"Not only do we get the story of what happens when it’s father’s turn to fry up the potato pancakes, but you get the recipe too!" —Newsday

"Another in Zalben’s growing list of holiday books about Beni the Bear . . . Zalben adds a touch of light comedy to the story, which concludes with the family’s gathering to enjoy a few other holiday traditions with their pancake feast. . . .Homey and beautifully executed." —Booklist

"The adorable illustrations and the bears’ holiday story fire up young imaginations." —The Miami Herald

More latke recipes, plus instructions for making a clay menorah, salt-dough dreidels, a cake filled with chocolate coins and other ideas fill Hanukkah Fun by Judy Bastyra, illus. by Catherine Ward. This amply illustrated if uninspired activity book also tells how to make gifts such as a "perfect pouch" for coins and "excellent oils" for cooking or bathing. Kwanzaa Fun by Linda Robertson, illus. by Julia Pearson, provides craft ideas, recipes and games in a similar format. Kingfisher, paper $4.95; Kwanzaa $5.95; 32p ages 7-11 ISBN 0-7534-5011-9; -5016-X; Sept.

How is this Chanukah different from all other Chanukah's? Well, this time, Mama's tired of making potato latkes pancakes, so Papa takes over. "Let's have a latke contest!" he says. But Beni flips his latke onto Sara's head. Rosie's are lumpy, Max's are greasy, and Leo's are so ugly that no one will eat them. It would have been a pretty hungry Chanukah, but then Papa stepped in and baked platter after platter of perfect, round latkes. Zalben's illustrations don't add much to this nice story about a family working together. But she makes up for this by including Papa's award-winning recipe and the music and lyrics for a popular Chanukah song the whole family will enjoy.
Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
Beni's family holds a contest to see who can make the best latkes for Chanukah. Some are too lumpy, others not cooked enough, and others are too small. The contest is really never in doubt as Papa moves into the kitchen and makes up a batch of delicious pancakes. At the end of this delightful tale, there is a recipe for latkes and the music for "O Chanukah."
Children's Literature - Susie Wilde
The warm, loving bear family is the focus of this Zalben story released in a tiny size so that children can carry the season's warmth with them. Papa's Latkes relates a situation that occurs when Mama tires of cooking latkes and no one else in the family can compensate...until Papa's perfect latkes save the day. Papa also delivers shiny new frying pans for Hanukkah gifts so everyone can practice and he gives the readers his recipe to try for themselves.
