Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Before Pretty Princess Elizabeth can marry handsome Prince Ronald, a dragon burns down the castle and carries Ronald off. Dressed in a paper bag, the brave princess heroically finds the dragon's cave, tricks the dragon into exhausting itself, rescues Ronald while the dragon is sleeping. Ronald then has only one thing to say to Elizabeth--that she is a mess! Elizabeth quickly realizes that she is better off without this ungrateful bum. Young feminists, here is a book for you!

    The Paper Bag Princess

This is a book your students will really enjoy. Elizabeth was a Princess who was in love with a Prince named Ronald. Ronald was captured by a dragon and through her cleverness, Elizabeth saved him. The ending is a funny surprise. The book is a good source when teaching character traits. Gary Dominicus

    Childhood Favorite

When I was little, I would have my mom read this to me every night, British accents and all. I got so familiar with it that I knew all the words by heart. One day I decided to read it by myself. It wasn¿t until halfway through the book that my mom noticed that I had not once turned the pages while I was reading, haha. It¿s a great book and I recommend it to any girl who wants to be a princess when she grows up, `cause that¿s how it¿s done.

    Not the typical fairy tale

This story is great to combat the typical 'oh save me prince charming' syndrome that the classics perpetrate. A previous review mentioned that it was disappointing that the prince rejected the princess due to her appearance. It neglected to mention that the princess saved the prince! She then made her own decision against marrying him! Bravo! I am buying this for my friends and their daughters.

    Real princess fun

My daughter has loved this book since she was 4- she is now 6 and still enjoys it.So nice to read a princess book in which the princess is a smart cookie and has a good dose of self-esteem.Prince Ronald turns out to be a jerk, and Princess Elizabeth puts him in his place! Add a clueless fire-breathing dragon, and you've got a fun, humorous read!

    Disappointing

I love the story, but the book itself was a big disappointment. I thought it would be a regular sized book, but it was extremely tiny, like a mini book.

Highly Recommended for Girls Who Want to be a Princess!

Great story for young girls who think they want to be a princess when they grow up, and believe that they will meet their Prince Charming. It will open their eyes to the reality of life - that you cannot judge a person by their looks or occupations (or royalty status!).

    Recommend Highly!

It's a reverse fairy tale. It shows the power of a princess. Every boy (and girl) should read this book! It's short and only takes about 5 minutes (for an adult) and 10 minutes (for beginning readers) to read through this!

    my favorite!

I absolutely love this story! A great message for all of our little princesses. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be a princess, but you need to have your priorities straight!

    I Also Recommend:

The Paper Bag Princess....The Feminist Cinderella!

This delightful book tells the story of a princess who is in love with a prince and who ends up rescuing the snobbish fop from a dragon, only to be totally unappreciated. Her resolve and her sense of herself. not to mention her quick thinking save the day! This book helps little girls to realize that a titled prince is not always a "real" prince and that they have the power to fight dragons and succeed!

Told in a truly charming, funny and clever way, the book is a classic by the great children's author Robert Munsch. It is well worth the purchase price and a must for teachers teaching fairytales and parents of little girls.

A book that sends the right message to young girls

This is not about your disney princesses- this book will empower your daughters to believe that they don't need someone to save them, they are clever enough to save themselves. It is a wonderful story for the early years and reading aloud, and finally for young readers who are reading on their own.

    Great atypical ending

I love this twist on the typical princess story. I want my daughter to know that she can do the saving if needed, brains work better than brawn and she should walk away if someone treats her poorly.

    Princess

I first bought this book for my daughter sortly after publication. We both loved it and read it over and over. She is now 25 years old and still loves the story. I recently purchased it for my granddaughter to continue the tradition of telling stories about strong, funny, beautiful young women.

    Good book for young readers.

The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch is an interesting story about a princess. My daughter does not like it as much as the other Robert Munsch books but she still enjoys reading it.

    what kind of message?

the book was really cute until the last page when the prince rejects her for not looking like a princess. the humor was lost on me and my daughter. i just don't think it's an appropriate message for young kids to whom this book is marketed.

    I Love This Book

My mom would read me this story when I was little, and I loved it! It's great that there is a princess out there who isn't going to mope around and wait for the prince to come and save her. This is one of the best books I have ever read.

    HEEEEEYYYY Dragon!

This is a great story for children, particularly when sound effects are added during the dragon scenes. I drove 5 boys to/from a weekly event, and this was by far their favorite story. An absolute must in the wake of all the Disney movies--every child needs at least one story that is untraditional and non-animated!!
