Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Paper is a product that surrounds us as we lead our daily lives. It is also a material that has a multiplicity of uses and forms. Colorful paper is used to wrap presents at holidays. Tough corrugated cardboard is used to protect fragile objects. Thin and soft tissues are used to wipe the smooth skin of an infant. Finely woven stationary can come with fanciful embossing. It is paper, that commonplace but valuable material, which Claire Llewellyn discusses in this volume in the "Material World" series. As is the case in other books in this informative series, Paper combines an information-packed narrative, colorful illustrations, and intermittent hands-on activities. In Paper younger readers will learn about a material that they probably use in some way every day of their lives. This is a fun-filled book but also one that will educate its readers about paper and its many uses. 2002, Franklin Watts, Romaneck

Gr 2-4-Slim overviews filled with color photos and reproductions. In both books, two-page chapters using precise text highlight a number of simple concepts. Paper covers the qualities and uses of available products ("Paper Is Soft," "Paper Keeps Things Clean," etc.), manufacturing ("Paper Is Made from Trees"), and recycling ("Saving Paper"). Silk describes the unique qualities of the material, the various types, origin, and silk farming. In both titles, "Fantastic Fact" sidebars and "Try This" activities dot the pages. Clear illustrations and appealing layouts enhance these presentations. Libraries owning Chris Oxlade's Paper (Heinemann Library, 2001) and Adele Richardson's Silk (Creative Education, 1999) may not need Llewellyn's titles but both are attractive introductions to their topics.-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
