Overview

Andy finds he's in trouble again during a trip to the big city.

Andy Russell and his best friend, Tamika, are going to visit her aunt Mandy for an "exciting weekend in the big city." He quickly learns that instead of doing fun things like checking out the zoo and the natural history museum, they'll be doing "Aunt Mandy stuff"--Ñand that means going to fancy restaurants, the art museum, and the ballet. Spending the day with Aunt Mandy, Tamika, and a spoiled, bratty upstairs neighbor provides lots of challenges for Andy as he struggles to enjoy himself...and to figure out who is causing all the trouble this time.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
“Easy enough for beginning chapter-book readers, but with a thoroughly engaging plot, this fourth entry in the series is great fare for individual or group reading.”—School Library Journal
“The chapter book crowd will discover that this lively “mystery” is an entertaining addition to the series.”—Booklist
Children's Literature
Andy Russell is not looking forward to spending a weekend with his friend Tamika's Aunt Mandy. Knowing that Aunt Mandy does not have animals, does not eat pizza, and expects proper etiquette, Andy is ready for his father to just turn the car around. But when he discovers hamsters parachuting from the top of Mandy's high rise apartment building, Andy decides there is enough adventure and mystery there to keep him occupied. With visits to museums, dinners at fancy restaurants and some detective work on the side, Andy not only discovers the hamster-hating culprit, but also finds that he actually enjoys life in the city with Aunt Mandy. This easy-to-read chapter book has just the right amount of suspense and adventure to capture the imagination of young readers. Short chapters and realistic dialogue make this an excellent book for readers who are making the transition from picture books to young reader's novels. 2000, Gulliver Books, $14.00. Ages 7 to 10. School Library Journal
Gr 2-4-Andy and his friend Tamika are spending the weekend at the girl's aunt's luxurious apartment building in the city. They arrive just in time to catch some hamsters dropping through the air in silk-handkerchief parachutes from an upper-story apartment, and Andy is determined to find out who has mistreated the animals. When Aunt Mandy includes a younger neighbor in their outings to a museum, a ballet, and a restaurant, he does his best to get Andy into trouble of all sorts, and he deduces that Jason is responsible for the hamster incident. Readers will identify with Andy's fears about unfamiliar situations and adults who expect more decorum than the child's parents, but they will also recognize childless Aunt Mandy's growing awareness of her young guests' needs and behavior. Easy enough for beginning chapter-book readers, but with a thoroughly engaging plot, this fourth entry in the series is great fare for individual or group reading.-Lynda Ritterman, Atco Elementary School, NJ Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
