Overview

For the most realistic view of pre-hospital emergency care, paramedics use MOSBY'S PARAMEDIC REFRESHER AND REVIEW: A CASE BASED APPROACH. This concise text covers all the information needed for recertification preparation and review. It features basic concepts of patient assessment and treatment, incorporating anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology in the context of actual patient encounters. Each chapter presents several real-life emergency scenarios. Questions and answers follow, so paramedics receive immediate feedback.

Features a case-based approach, using actual patient encounters, for realistic learning and increased retention to make information more easily applicable in the field. Relates anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to patient signs and symptoms to promote understanding at the most basic levels, which means a more thorough grasp of the topic and better performance in the field. Asks questions in a format similar to the thought process of the paramedic on the scene to promote understanding of how one gets from initial assessment through patient transport. Provides answers with final outcome to eliminate guesswork and suggest the most correct response. Includes scenarios with coverage of hot topics such as: pediatric trauma, endocrine emergencies (other than diabetes), neonatal emergencies, and patients with tubes and shunts. Provides a cross-reference table identifying trauma, pediatrics, and geriatrics cases by chief complaint or specific diagnosis to allow for pointed study of these particular topics. Uses 50 ECG strips throughout case studies with interpretation provided in question and answer portion of cases to add visual interest to the text and a realistic feature to the case scenarios. The author is a leading expert in prehospital care, providing this text with the most current, accurate information.

The book contains black-and-white illustrations.

Reviewer: Ronald A. Grimstead(City of Houston)
Description: This book represents a method of teaching and refreshing paramedics using scenarios and a list of the critical thoughts that should be occurring with each patient.
Purpose: The purpose is to aid the refreshing paramedic in "tying everything together." This is a worthy objective, and with educators acknowledging the effectiveness of scenario based teaching, this publication is needed. I think the authors effectively and thoroughly meet those objectives.
Audience: I agree that the intent is that this book will be used by refreshing paramedics, but it also has applications in the initial paramedic class. The principal authors' credentials include research in the effacacy of scenario based teaching and she is the EMS Education Coordinator for the Omaha Fire Department. That solidifies her credibility.
Features: This publication strengthens a well documented method of teaching critical thinking: scenarios. The authors are thorough in covering all types of emergencies and stressing the relationship between the pathophysiology of an emergency and the patients' history with the physical findings. I especially applaud themfor attempting and succeeding to write a book that stimulates thought, explains the observations found, and invites various treatments. It would be very interesting to see how the authors would use this publication. Different ECG lead illustrations is a shortcoming noticed.
Assessment: The quality of this book is excellent. It definitely stimulates thought and the authors challenged my ability to conclude a differential diagnosis. They asked questions on several occassions that I probably would not have asked myself. This book is impressive and was formatted with the basic concept of patient assessment and would be very useful in strengthening a refreshing paramedic in the realm of critical thinking. I have not seen or read any other book written in this type of format.

    Extremely helpful review tool

I recently presented this manual to paramedic students preparing to take the National Registry exam. The case-based approach was extremely helpful and useful, expecially to students who were 'struggling' in the class.
