Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Rachelle Andrade
When life-threatening injuries or illness occur, patients often need emergency care before they reach a hospital. The highly capable paramedics in this title from "The Work of Heroes: First Responders in Action" series are trained to aid in exactly this sort of situation. Large color photos and gripping true stories of near-death rescues will give readers an understanding and appreciation for these heroic first responders. Children will learn how paramedics saved countless lives during tragedies such as the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. These accounts and many others demonstrate the importance of the specially trained medical technicians in stabilizing patients until they can be transported safely to an emergency room or surgical suite. Children will also learn about a paramedic career, the training that is required, and the dynamics of these two-person teams. Photos with captions and interesting side notes enhance the text and new or challenging words are printed in bold and defined in the glossary. A diagram identifies all the different equipment that paramedics use in their effort to save lives. Most of those at a third grade reading level will be able to read this book on their own, but the material will appeal to children of all ages who are intrigued by the work of paramedics.
