This short chapter book covers several topics, which could cause confusion for the young readers for which it is intended. The first chapter provides brief information about the celebration of Thanksgiving and gives credit to Sarah Josepha Hale for her part in establishing it as a national holiday. The next three chapters are a biography of Hale (best known for writing "Mary Had a Little Lamb") beginning with her birth in 1788. Hale was an intelligent woman. She was fortunate to become well educated through the efforts of her mother, her brother, and her husband. Widowed at a young age, Hale took to writing to support herself and her five children. She wrote books and articles and edited magazines. And she wrote numerous letters in support of making Thanksgiving a national holiday. Finally, Abraham Lincoln, the fifth President she contacted, granted her wish. Chapters 5 and 6 discuss the tradition of pardoning a turkey during the Thanksgiving season. Various oral traditions are related, but the first official pardon for a turkey was granted by President George H.W. Bush in 1989.
