A Common Sense, Feel Good Guide For All Parents

After I delivered my first child, I anxiously awaited the arrival of the manual to go with her. It never did show up. By the time my third child came along, I started to feel like I could write a manual of my own based on what I had learned from my experiences and mistakes. However, I also felt like I was constantly changing the way I parented each time a new issue came up and that was only confusing to all of us. I knew and had read in every parenting book I purchased or rented from the library that being consistent was of utmost importance when managing my children. What was often missing from the puzzle was being respectful in how I managed them. What followed were feelings of failure and a lack of confidence in knowing how to be the best parent I could be. For the most part, no one knew what was going on and what to expect when mistakes were made or successes took place. Using the Red, Yellow, Green Framework puts all of us in one household on the same page for what we believe is right and wrong and nurtures decisions which are in the best interest of oneself, family and others in our lives. (This includes those who are guests as our `Trandahl Way¿ is proudly posted on the refrigerator!) Red, Yellow, Green Framework allows time for family togetherness when we have family meetings and overall, is the best built-in, free of charge therapist and life-coach for all ages. Do we still make mistakes and fail? Of course, but being respectful, saying sorry and asking to be forgiven are ground rules with mistakes. In the end, we still like each other. It is my highest hope that my children leave our household knowing the difference between right and wrong, feel good about serving others and be confident and happy in who they are and what they are doing with their lives. I hope they frequently visit knowing they are still so deeply loved and accepted as my children, and valued as one of my adult friends. Red, Yellow, Green is sort of like the yellow brick road¿follow it and they¿ll always want to go back home.

    Parenting that Works

Superb! When a book has the power to change lives as dramatically as Parenting on Purpose did for our family, it belongs on every parent¿s must-read list. The changes that have taken place in our family after implementing Family Meetings are astounding. Dr. Alden presents an approach to parenting that is natural and works whether one is in crisis mode or merely settling the dispute over who gets to sit in the front of the bathtub. This book is a gift to families.
