Nothing is more daunting than to bring home the first baby and have no point of reference for what lies ahead. Nixon's book is a handy little tool with user-friendly pointers for all parents with little ones. What a great gift for the new parent or the one at wit's end with a toddler! Quick and easy to read and a wealth of information.

I recommend this book to anyone, whether parent, grandparent or teacher, who has questions about common behaviors of children from birth to age 5. This book is full of good advice organized into separate topics so that you can quickly find an answer to a specific question. The author shares clear solutions for many common parenting situations and she uses lots of examples from her own family and from others. Each situation is covered in two to three pages, and is easy to find in the book. You might want to read the book through, and then keep it handy to refer to when facing things like ¿separation anxiety¿, ¿handling a biter¿, ¿monster in the closet¿ and ¿relief from cabin fever (recipe for making play dough, creating a music band by making instruments and getting out the kazoo), and more. I also appreciate the age-appropriate gift suggestions (toy telephone for ages 1-2, costumes and dressup clothing for age 3, etc.).

In this book, Brenda Nixon offers you the refreshing encouragement you need to stay sane those first five years. As a national parenting speaker and columnist, she knows what the critical issues are in raising your child. She¿s condensed her most sought-after columns into one practical book that would make a great addition to any parent¿s bookshelf. The book is divided into three sections: Embrace the First Year, Survive the Toddler Years, and Maneuver the Preschool Years. Nixon¿s positive tone builds rapport with readers who want to hear from someone they can trust, who can answer questions in a loving way. She doesn¿t shy away from any controversial issues, and includes her columns about temper tantrums, clinging toddlers, biting, spanking dilemmas, nightmares, thumb-sucking, bedtime resistance¿you name it. In the appendices, you¿ll also find a wonderful gift-giving key for newborns up to age five, a child development guide, and a fantastic list of resources ¿ with current website information. The table of contents makes it easy to look up any topic, and you don¿t have to wade through extraneous ads and information to find what you really need. What I also like about this book is that she includes plenty of in-depth research, and she keeps her readers focused on the long-term vision of parenting. I think this book would make a great baby shower gift for moms-to-be, as well as a refresher for parents in the thick of those early years. It would also be helpful for nursery or daycare workers, as well as grandparents who spend a lot of time caring for their grandchildren. Packed with wisdom, this is a handy book that will empower you to soar above the difficulties and embrace the joys of the sacred calling of parenthood.

Brenda Nixon¿s Parenting Power in the Early Years is like a multi-vitamin¿petite in size, but potent in benefit. Each supercharged chapter provides a perfect prescription for healthy, happy children and the parents who love them. With topics like ¿Great Expectations¿ in the first year to ¿To Spank or Not¿ for toddlers to ¿Raise Responsible Kids¿ for preschoolers, Nixon, a child development educator, boosts parents¿ confidence to meet each new child-rearing challenge with expertise and encouragement. Each short chapter packs a wallop with practical tips, insightful research, and Nixon¿s own creative experience as a mother. Reading this tiny tome will put power into your parenting for the early years, and lay a foundation for those to follow. Wow, the stuff that spoke to me has really made a difference in raising my todder. It's beginning to be OK living with a toddler now that I understand more of his development and know how to act when he misbehaves. This book is a god-send. I plan to give copies to all my friends who are expecting or who got toddlers.

For parents wondering if their child is going to be ready for Kindergarten or how to help them be ready this book dispells any doubt. It's written in 3 sections; the first year of parenting, toddler years, and parenting preschoolers. All sections helped me but I especially used the preschool part with a 3 y/o.

Brenda Nixon gives practical advice from her years of experience as a mom and her educational experience that helps a first-time mom understand every-day parenting. Nixon mentions her emotions that most mothers relate to, but were suprised about when it happened to them. Any expectant mother and first-time mom would get a lot of practical advice from this wonderful book. I especially appreciate the appendix that offers other sources of help on many topics.

After reading this book I felt so much more educated about my son's development and ways to be a good dad. It's a short read and I like that because nobody today has time to trudge through thick chapter books. I sat down with this book just to flip through what my wife had bought and I ended up reading about half of it right then! The author makes so much sense in her suggestions and research. I could really relate to some of the stories after having raised 2 kids and now on my 3rd. No matter how many kids you have, you can always learn something new because each kid is different.

As a mom I want to be the best I can for my baby. This book helps me understnad how to act when my dd behaves a certain way. I like how you can just flip to a section like on when to start cereal and there's the answer. This book doesn't make me feel like my questions are stupid and makes me know how to be a better mom. The parts on preschool kids are good to know because it will get me prepared for those years. I LOVE THIS BOOK!!!

Brenda Nixon¿s practical and easy-to-follow advice would be a wonderful gift to expecting parents or those who already have a houseful of kids! I had the pleasure of interviewing Brenda for a national daily radio program, and the kindness and faith behind her words makes every idea even more helpful. Here¿s someone who knows what parenting is like and is willing to help you discover all the joys God has in store for you as a mom or a dad. If you¿re looking for some relief from the pressures of parenting, this is the book for you!

Parenting Power! is a great resource for the new parent as well as experienced parents like myself. One of the best aspects of the book is that it give parents the confidence and assurance that their style is correct. I also appreciated new ideas for disciplining my children and fresh insight into my children's behavior.

It's so easy to understand -- unlike the 'highbrow' junk that most people are used to reading.

My child recently began biting. I read the section about why kids bite and what to do about it and it made so much sense. This book is really helpful.

Parenting Power gives solid answers to age-old parenting questions. In a user-friendly format, Brenda gives practical childcare tips for parents on the go. One reader just told us: 'I'm amazed at how much the author packed into less than 100 pages!! And good style -- sympathetic yet informative & with humility, for all mothers feel their lack.'
