Meet the Author

FOSTER CLINE, M.D., is a physician, child psychiatrist, author, and internationally known speaker. He has authored numerous articles and books including coauthoring of the PARENTING WITH LOVE AND LOGIC series, national best-sellers that have been translated into four other languages. His combination of humor, pizzazz, solid and useful advice, and use of multimedia makes every presentation an experience to remember with high take-home value. An extensive follow-up study showed that his presentations have lasting impact on most individuals' lives even one year after the presentation. His pertinent and usable information is applicable across all areas of life-parenting, couple relationships, education, and business. Dr. Cline has been speaking and consulting for over thirty years and has worked with groups such as the Colorado Bar Association, American Fidelity Insurance, the National Association of Adopted Children, and numerous hospitals, parent groups and school districts.

In his 20 years as a speaker and consultant, Jim Fay has become one of America's most sought-after presenters in the fields of parenting, positive discipline, and classroom management. He is a best-selling author, and has become the pied piper for parents and educators searching for practical behavior management techniques.

Jim has 31 years of experience in a variety of educational settings including public, private, and parochial schools. He has served as a consultant to parents, mental health organizations, and the U.S. military. Through his experiences as an art and music teacher, classroom teacher, principal, and administrator in both inner city and suburban schools, he saw the need to structure the classroom, the school, and the home in a way that would build positive relationships with children. “Parents and teachers often tell me ‘it shouldn’t be a popularity contest.’ But when I started out as a parent and a teacher with lots of lecturing, threats, rewards, and punishments… it just didn’t work,” Jim says. “It’s all about teaching children responsibility and self-discipline, while at the same time giving the message that the adults in their lives care about them.”

Jim slowly developed this new philosophy, learning as he went, experimenting with different techniques until he found a consistent and practical way to implement these strategies in his work with children. His philosophy has grown into what is now known as Love and Logic®. “The Love and Logic philosophy primarily teaches character,” says Jim. “And this character is built out of a formula that involves three things: the child makes a mistake, the adult responds with empathy and compassion instead of anger, and the child learns from the consequences of his or her actions.”

Jim is the parent of three children. His son Charles, a former school psychologist, joined the Love and Logic Institute as a speaker and consultant, and was recently named president of the organization. Jim has authored hundreds of books, articles, audios and videos, and is the man that coined the term “Helicopter Parents.”

Books, videos, and audios by Jim Fay include:

· Parenting with Love and Logic
· Teaching with Love and Logic
· Helicopters, Drill Sergeants, and Consultants
· The Four Steps to Responsibility
· Raising the Odds for Responsible Behavior
· Secrets of Step-Parenting
· Shaping Self-Concept

    Enlightning

The book was very good in describing the different types of parental styles. I am trying some of the techniques on my 13 year old and they seem to work. I talk to him about consequences and choices and the conversations have gone much smoother.

    Common Sense

Without withholding due praise for the odd gem of old-fashioned common sense in there, this work seems to be mostly self-serving (constant mention of the 'Love and Logic' seminars, and how the parents in the presented scenarios could never have coped without them), and almost evangelical in its nature. There are frequent, unnecessary references to Biblical teachings. This book is actually sold as a Christian religious book by many retailers. The NavPress (see 'The Navigators')publish or published this one as one of their titles. However, there is no mention of any faith-based content in any advertising (or in the website, jacket, foreword, seminars advertisements etc.). I have no personal issue with faith/religion, but I prefer not to read missionary Christian based works. Had I known this was such I would not have bought this book. Foster Cline is considered by many to be the father of 'Attachment Therapy'. I would urge you to research this independently.

    Natural Consequences - WOW!

The principles in this book when applied will prepare your teen for what ever this world throws at them. I wish I had read this book about 15 years sooner. This book is a must and I've given my daughter a copy of the same book for younger children.

    Highly Recommend

Came recdommended by the assistant principal at my son's High School. Great parenting "nuggets" and an indepth look in to why teenagers do what they do. Great for any one that currently has teenagers or will soon. I wish I'd known about this series of parenting books when my children were younger.

    Great book

Haven't read it all (so only 4 * for now), but so far the advice only makes sense, and makes you hit your head as if you could have had a V8. We're not raising children, we're raising adults, and if we treat them like they can't do anything on their own, and they never get to make any decisions on their own (or face any consequences - no just punishment - there's a difference), they'll either rebel, or never leave your house a successful, confident person, who can face problems, and solve them! They're smarter than we think.
My son just turned 12, and we were always arguing, and my husband was always jumping on him, and no one was talking and our pleasant moments were few. The power struggle was immense (yes, already), and it affected all the relationships in the house. We're all getting along better, and our son is learning his actions have consequences, whether it be from us, or from some other external source. Now, we are all looking at goals, and helping to reach those goals, and it's much more pleasant. At 12, he's still got some "kid" in him, and so nothing is perfect; there are always ways to adjust for your family, but he's been much more aware and we've been much more equipped to handle things as they come up.
Be aware, we have also sought counseling for our family as well, and the two together has made a difference; our counselor suggested this book. Counseling has not needed to be intense, as we have not allowed the issues to get out of hand for too long. If the issues are a little more serious, it may not be as "easy", but I believe it can work, if you're willing to put in the time and attention.
It's been well worth the money and time to read it!

    Heard it was very good.

I would love to give a review of this book, but gave it as a
    gift to my daughter.
