Overview

Transmitting your passions to your children, motivating them with shared goals, and getting them excited about values are the most important things you can do as a parent.  With great humor and insight, Shmuley Boteach, bestselling author and former host of TLC's Shalom in the Home, lays out his guiding principles for taking your child to the mountaintop, and creating a parent-child bond based on vitality, exuberance, and mutual respect.

Everywhere you go these days, you see unruly, unhappy kids, or lifeless, listless teenaged zombies. Admit it: even your own kids can be hard to reach. They prefer friends to family, video games to books, and headphones to conversations. But you’ve given them everything—what could be missing?

According to Boteach, the missing ingredient is inspiration: giving your child the example, incentive, and tools to make something of themselves, to live life at the wave’s crest.

Children are troubled today because they do not experience true childhood, asserts Rabbi Boteach (Judaism for Everyone: Renewing Your Life Through the Vibrant Lessons of the Jewish Faith). Using his experiences as a father of eight and citing examples from his television show, Shalom in the Home, he claims that parents can do better by using his PLANT method (protect, love, activity, novelty, tradition). He declares that "our primary job as parents is not to love our children, but to protect them," especially from the media. Because only family, he insists, can provide unconditional love, your relationship with your family is more important than the one with your friends. Boteach refers frequently to God and insists that spiritual or religious traditions are necessary. Much of the advice here is repeated often in parenting literature, such as the importance of family dinners. Some concepts seem unrealistic, like the idea that children will prefer inspiring family activities to outside influences. And still other suggestions echo redundantly throughout the book, falling under more than one aspect of the PLANT plan. Unless Boteach is popular in your community, pass.-Janet Clapp, Athens-Clarke Cty. Lib., GA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Finally a book that explains a child is a product of his/her parents. A great book to help inspire parents to be their best at parenting. Not a 10 step guide to parenting, rather a method of parenting that makes the parent self-reflect and self-actualize. Not a book for the lazy minded.
