Library JournalIntended as an overview for parents and coaches, this book provides basic information on common types of physical and mental disabilities and behavior disorders, as well as tips on communicating with children thus affected. One chapter describes sample warmup, isometric, isotonic, and "cool down" exercises, while another outlines the history of the Special Olympics. The heart of the book, however, is its section on adaptable sports, which covers everything from beep baseball for the visually impaired, wheelchair football, showdown (a combination of air hockey and tennis), to skiing adapted for amputees or the blind. Since the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the disabled have received increased visibility and this book, although brief, meets a unique need.-John Maxymuk, Rutgers Univ.
