This cookbook by the editors of Parents Magazine offers over 100 dishes that the whole family can enjoy, from breakfasts to dinners and desserts. Even though I no longer have younger children at home, I found plenty of recipes my grown-up family can enjoy. The appeal to kids is mostly in the simplicity and presentation of the food with lots of ideas for making it fun (using cookie cutters to create shapes for sandwiches, cheese, and fruit, for example). The cookbook has lots of color photographs to inspire any cook, and offers recipes for breakfast, lunch, supper (including side dishes), snacks and drinks, and treats/desserts. I liked the suggestion that most kids wake up hungry and aren't as likely to be fussy about what they eat so breakfast is a good meal to introduce new foods. The other thing I liked about this cookbook is that "kid-friendly" means the recipes use basic healthy ingredients that can be found at any grocery store and very few processed foods, which makes it adult-friendly as well. The emphasis is on using whole grains, lean meats, lower sodium ingredients, and fresh fruit and vegetables. Lunch recipes geared to get out of the peanut butter and jelly, mac and cheese rut include a great Kiddie Cob Salad featuring diced turkey, cheese, chick peas, grapes, avocado, and red leaf lettuce that can be enjoyed as finger food. Other recipes encourage ways to include vegetables and fruit in a dish such as Butternut Squash Casserole that is a version of macaroni and cheese with a healthy twist, and Pumpkin Penne that has canned pumpkin added to the pasta. Some of the salads include the addition of fruit. A recipe my family enjoyed was Plum-Good Chicken Burgers using ground chicken breaded with panko bread crumbs and flavored with ginger, olive oil, and sweet and sour sauce served on whole grain buns. Other recipes I have tagged to try include Citrus Beef Kabobs, Pink Lemonade Cookies, Mini Nacho Cups, and Easy Turkey Stromboli. I do recommend this cookbook for families as a way to create healthy, easy to make meals that appeal to kids as well as teens and grown-ups.
