Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Sheilah Egan
Defining a family as "a group of people," this title in the Acorn early readers "Families" series describes the adults who care for the children in families. A variety of family structures are introduced with matter of fact statements such as "All families are different." And "All families are special." The colorful, clear pictures include a wide sampling of ethnicities and ages—of both parents and children. The faces reflect love and caring in situations showing a number of settings: indoors and outside. We see families involved together, enjoying many activities encountered in daily life, such as reading together, grocery shopping, walking, celebrating special occasions, and just being with each other. The roles of stepparents and adoptive parents are discussed as well as the facts that some families have two parents while others may have only one or situations when other adults care for the children. As with the other titles in the series, there is a table of contents, a "picture glossary," a brief index, and notes to parents and teachers with ideas for before and after reading strategies to make the book more meaningful. This straight forward material will introduce many different aspects of family life and subtly suggest that all sorts of families are just another part of our shared human experience. Fine for preschool read aloud or older, challenged readers. Rated level H with 145 words, this series also includes: Aunts and Uncles, Brothers and Sisters, Cousins, Foster Parents, Grandparents, and Role Models. Reviewer: Sheilah Egan
