VOYAThis guide for parents helps them to know how to talk to their teenagers about sexual abstinence. It is organized into ten steps, each presenting statistics and other information about teen sexuality and parents' roles. As part of Step Two: Explain the Risks, the author details the emotional hazards and the risks of pregnancy and disease that come from teen sex. Some of the other steps are "Be Committed," "Build Self-Esteem," "Talk About Relationships," "Teach Refusal Skills," and "Practice Unconditional Love." At the end of each step, questions help the parent reflect on the information provided, and then a hands-on discussion guide helps the parent and teenager work through the information together. Interspersed throughout the text are quotes from teens who were surveyed in preparation for this book. One hundred teens who have chosen abstinence were asked what influenced them in their decision and what advice they would give parents. Their responses indicate that parents were a major factor in their decision. This easy-to-read guide offers practical advice to parents looking for a way to help their teens make good choices. The discussions are somewhat contrived, but the information and the reflections for parents are useful. The appendixes include an outline of a parent training program that might be useful for counselors, a copy of the teen survey, and the Choosing the Best curriculum for grades six through twelve. This abstinence-based book might help balance other material on teen sexuality in the collection. 2002, Choosing the Best Publishing, ; Illus. Source Notes. Appendix., Trade pb.
