Overview

The majestic palaces, the great boulevards melting into distant horizons, the golden domes, the slow flow of the Seine, the lively bistros: Paris has everything. Over the centuries, many cities have seen their charm diminish, their glories faded by time’s inexorable march. But Paris has preserved its vibrant beauty, proudly safeguarding its palaces and parks and grand squares and enchanting small streets. At the same time, Paris is a generous home to the avant-garde of the contemporary cultural scene. Together with the great avenues of Napoleon and Haussmann stand monuments of the modern age.

Paris has always honored its reputation and history. In the 19th century, the Eiffel Tower celebrated the Paris Exposition of 1885; in the 20th century President Georges Pompidou commissioned the bristling Beaubourg and François Mitterrand initiated the starkly simple white arch of La Défense and, to celebrate the bicentenary of the Louvre Museum, opened a new wing, entered by the now famous courtyard-piercing glass pyramid.

And the 21st century ushered in the completion of the supermodern Bibliotheque Nationale. Paris continues to evolve, confidently mixing past, present and future, summoning memories, ghosts and hopes, affirming the city’s voice as a queen and lover for present and future visitors.

Paris remains the unique and inimitable experience. This volume presents the city in all its variety, evoking the suggestions, sentiments, colors and perfumes which emanate from its magical urban landscapes and captivating views. Austere and aristocratic in its oldest quarters, futuristic and cosmopolitan in the ascetic squares of La Défense, Paris reveals itself in this book, sharing its mysteries and inviting the reader to experience its ever-caressive charm.
