Overview

Vogue is eccentric, amusing, and nonconformist. Vogue is provocative and avant-garde: it breaks with convention. This book brings together in one volume some ninety years’ worth of iconic Paris Vogue covers, both illustrated and photographic.
A magazine that has documented trends for nearly a century provides an archive full of more than pretty pictures: these images record the history of style and chic, of trends in fashion and design, as well as the month-to-month whims of popular culture.
Among the covers are creations by some of the greatest artists of their era: distinguished illustrators such as Lepape, Gruau, and Benito, and photographers like Man Ray, Steichen, Newton, Bourdin, and Testino. Here, too, are iconic faces: Catherine Deneuve, Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Kate Moss, and more.

Vogue has long been the name in fashion, and this strikingly lovely book focuses on the covers of the Paris editions. Rachline, who has been writing for French Vogue for 25 years, does a fine job of portraying the phenomenon of the magazine both in historical and in geographical context—after all, Paris was the cultural capital of the world, and the covers of fashion magazines have special importance. Among the creations included are illustrations by Georges Lepape, René Gruau, and Eduardo Garcia Benito and the photographs of Edward Steichen and Helmut Newton. Famous faces that have appeared on the magazine range from Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, and Twiggy to Kate Moss and many other glamorous women and men of the day. The variety of subjects, illustrations, and designs is impressive. VERDICT As a sampler of cultural history, this volume will be a visual treat for anyone interested in fashion, contemporary art, and photography. Highly recommended.—Raymond Bial, First Light Photography, Urbana, IL
