Children's Literature - Gina Hagler
Parkour is an extreme sport in which participants use skills like vaulting and climbing over structures like benches and walls to move through an urban landscape without pausing. Parkour describes the history, training, and techniques required for success. It also talks about the people who participate and the physical and mental conditioning that are essential. It includes a glossary, an index, and online resources. Though definitely not a photo essay, stunning photographs taken from a variety of angles are used throughout the book to keep the reader engaged. The many images of adults and older teens leaping, falling, and jumping from heights or across alarmingly wide openings give the book an edgy tone while showing how dangerous—and exhilarating—parkour can be. The book is meant to be provocative in order to appeal to older, reluctant readers. It will definitely pique their interest! This book is part of the "Crabtree Contact" series. Books in this series cover high interest topics and include several reading levels. Reviewer: Gina Hagler
