Overview

A PARODY OUTLINE OF HISTORY by Donald Ogden Stewart. Stewart was a well known writer, playwright and critic, and a member of the famed Algonquin Round Table. The Round Table met for lunch and drinks (mostly drinks) in New York at the Algonquin Hotel, and was composed of a varied assortment of writers and wits, including Dorothy Parker, Robert Benchley, George Kaufman, Ernest Hemingway, and Groucho Marx, among others. Among the scads of books he wrote, most with some sort of humorous theme, this one was one of his most popular. It was a take-off on “The Outline of History” by H. G. Wells, a runaway best seller at the time. In Stewart’s version, he takes selected events in American history and provides a satiric spin on them, writing each episode in the style of some popular writer of the time, including Eugene O’Neill, Sinclair Lewis, and Scott Fitzgerald. This small book is certainly light reading, but it does manage to raise a smile or two in the process.

Meet the Author

Mr. H. G. Wells, in his “Outline of History,” was of necessity forced to omit the narration of many of the chief events in the history of these United States. Such omissions I have in this brief volume endeavored to supply. And as American history can possibly best be written by Americans and as we have among us no H. G. Wells, I have imagined an American history as written conjointly by a group of our most characteristic literary figures.

Apologies are due the various authors whose style and, more particularly, whose Weltanschauung I have here attempted to reproduce; thanks are due The Bookman for permission to reprint such of these chapters as appeared in that publication. I give both freely.

    Not worthwhile

"Parody" implies humor, but none is present. With only 61 pages, the author jumps from topic to topic quickly enough to leave everything unmemorable. In my opinion the book holds no value as either entertainment or instruction. I didn't finish it.
