Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Parrots, Pigs and Pugs—this “National Geographic Chapters” book presents the perfect assortment for animal-loving kids. Moira Rose Donohue presents three information packed chapters for each of three animals: Einstein: Parrot Genius!, Otis: When Pugs Fly, and Mudslinger: Hamming It Up. Einstein’s chapter is filled with beautiful photographs as well as informational sidebars including basic bird information and “Parrot Primer”. Einstein lives at the Knoxville Zoo and with his wide ranging vocabulary has even been on national television. Information on parrot conservation is also included. When Pugs Fly is the story of Otis, the pug who lived with a man named Will who taught skydiving in California. Information on skydiving as well as dogs and summertime dog care (particularly important since pugs have short snouts and a hard time cooling down in summer) round out this chapter on a “once in a lifetime dog” who loved skydiving and was even seen on TV. The final chapter is about Mudslinger, the potbellied pig, and his life with pig trainer John Vincent. Sidebars filled with information on potbellied pigs, training, and potbellied pig rescue round out the photo-filled chapter. A sneak peek chapter on Horse Escape Artists is followed by an index and “more information” chapter which provides details on all animals discussed in the book. A worthwhile addition to libraries. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman; Ages 7 to 10.

Parrot, pug and pig all have in common wonderful and warming stories of their adventures. You want them all as part of your family. Fascinating to read about the exciting times of each talented animal and those humans who are their friends and mentors. The fact boxes add really interesting information that makes this book both educational and fun to read. A book clearly to go to for all young readers.

Moira Donohue tells three incredible stories about animals whose intelligence and bravery surpass that of most humans. She uses witty humor alongside fascinating facts to tell stories that are both enjoyable and incredibly educational. In addition to the specific animal stories, Donohue includes a number of side bars with more generic facts about the different species to engage the reader at a deeper level, and encourage further exploration into the world of parrots, pigs, and pugs.
