Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Verzi Julian
Have you ever felt like you wanted a day where the world stopped just for a little while to shine its spotlight on you? Nine-year-old Casey is no different. All she wants is a birthday luncheon on the day of her birthday with her two best friends. Is this too much to ask? Well, like any woman of the 90's, Casey has her complications. Along with her rule-loving mom's insistence on eating green vegetables and taking baths, house painting is scheduled every three years. This year, the painters are scheduled to come on Casey's birthday. Colorful and sensitive, this book teaches us that compromise can be the spice of life.

Gr 2-4The three girls featured in Pajama Party (1992) and Nannies for Hire (1994, both Morrow) are now planning something newa seemingly simple birthday party. This true-to-life story becomes an adventure featuring relationships between best friends and family members, an ice-skating accident, and great fun. The first-person narrative is generally snappy but not as compelling as it was in the first two books. However, the fast-paced action accompanied by at least one full-color illustration per double-page spread will appeal to readers who are new to chapter books and comforted by lots of visual input.Gale W. Gr 24. Casey, Jenny, and Kate, the three best friends from "Pajama Party" (1992) and "Nannies for Hire" (1994), return for more adventures. This time, Casey is planning a Three-Girl Luncheon Party for her ninth birthday. When this scheme hits a snag (the painter will be redoing her bedroom), she opts for ice skating instead, much to the excitement of Jenny and Kate. The party is a great success until Kate falls and breaks her arm, temporarily interrupting the fun with an ambulance ride to the hospital. Short chapters, large print, and frequent watercolor-and-gouache illustrations make this an attractive choice for newly independent readers. Well-defined characters and subtle setting details (New York City) add to the appeal.
