Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
They're back in force! Series favorites kick off with the seventh volume of the Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot, Party Princess. This entry in the bestselling series finds Mia's student government coffers empty, but her determination to have fun nonetheless runneth over. Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
VOYA
Princess Mia is back. This time she is determined to convince her boyfriend, Michael, that she is a "party girl" ss la Paris Hilton. And to complicate matters, the student body is out of money and her Grandmother has roped her and her friends into a musical production with Mia as the lead. Of course, being the lead means kissing another boy, which sends over-analytical Mia into another crisis. There is no new ground in this latest installment of The Princess Diaries, and what readers once may have considered a fresh voice has not changed much throughout the course of the series. Mia worries, making mountains out of molehills while staying true to the pop culture teen-speak that Cabot employs so well. The book is not likely to create new Princess Mia fans but it will keep Cabot's series readers happy. VOYA CODES: 2Q 3P J S (Better editing or work by the author might have warranted a 3Q; Will appeal with pushing; Junior High, defined as grades 7 to 9; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12). 2006, HarperCollins, 288p., and PLB Ages 12 to 18.

KLIATT - Joanna Solomon
To quote the review of the hardcover in KLIATT, March 2006: We join our princess, heir to the throne of Genovia but currently a 15-year-old high school student in Manhattan, for the seventh installment in the series. Mia is struggling with simultaneously achieving self-actualization, juggling the student government's budget, impressing her boyfriend, and dealing with her haughty grandmother. None of these is a particularly serious crisis, but being the drama queen that she is, Mia agonizes. A new character named J.P. is introduced to the series. He's a self-described "loner," and Mia's friends think he is cute, which inevitably leads to more drama. Party Princess follows the same mold as the last six books: Mia overreacts to minor issues and the whole novel covers the span of about two weeks. It's a fast read, and it sets up the next volume well, because it's clear Cabot has no intention of slowing down. Mia may be a drama queen, but she is still lovable and her hilarious diary entries couldn't be more enjoyable. Reviewer: Joanna Solomon

Meet the Author

Meg Cabot was born in Bloomington, Indiana. In addition to her adult contemporary fiction, she is the author of the bestselling young adult fiction series, The Princess Diaries. More than 25 million copies of her novels for children and adults have sold worldwide. Meg lives in Key West, Florida, with her husband.

Biography

Meg Cabot knows that one of the best cures for feeling gawky and conspicuous is reading about someone who sticks out even more than you do. Her books for young adults invariably feature girls who have extraordinary powers that carry extraordinary burdens. Cabot's Princess Diaries series offers up the secret thoughts of Mia Thermopolis, who discovers at age 14 that she is actually the princess of a small European country. This revelation adds significantly to her extant concerns about crushes, friendships, school, and other matters falling under adolescent scrutiny.

Cabot, a native of Indiana weaned on Judy Blume and Barbara Cartland, was already a successful romance novelist (as Patricia Cabot) before she began writing for young adults; her alter-alter ego, Jenny Carroll, began a new series shortly after The Princess Diaries debuted. The Carroll books are divided between the Mediator series, starring a girl who can communicate with restless ghosts; and the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU books, in which a girl struck by lightning acquires the ability to locate missing people.

Cabot writes her books in a conspiratorial, first-person style that resonates with her readers. She has obviously kept a grip on the vernacular and the key issues of adolescence; but what makes her books so irresistible is the mixing of the mundane with the fantastic. After all, who wouldn't like to wake up and be a princess all of a sudden, or a seer? Cabot takes such offhand notions and roots them firmly in the details of average, middle-class American life. She has also tiptoed into mystery and paranormal suspense with other YA novels and series installments.

Cabot continues to write adult novels under various permutations of her given name (Meggin Patricia Cabot): from 19th-century historical romances to contemporary chick lit. And, as with her books for teens, these romances have earned praise for their lighthearted humor and well drawn characters.

Good To Know

Some interesting outtakes from our interview with Cabot:

"I am left handed."

"I hate tomatoes of any kind."

"I really wanted to be veterinarian, but I got a 410 on my math SATs."

"Writing used to be my hobby, but now that it's my job, I have no hobby -- except watching TV and laying around the pool reading US Weekly. I have tried many hobbies, such as knitting, Pilates, ballet, yoga, and guitar, but none of them have taken. So I guess I'm stuck with no hobby.

Princess Mia is back in this seventh installment of the popular PRINCESS DIARIES series, and, as usual, she's facing more problems than she knows what to do with. She's recently been elected student body president, which shouldn't really be that difficult a job since she's been in training to rule her own county someday, but it turns out that the student government is broke.

As if that weren't enough, Lilly starts a new literary magazine, calls it Fat Louie's Pink Butthole, and wants to publish Mia's story about "The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn in the Chili," a story that Mia would rather the entire student body not read.

Luckily (or not so luckily, depending on how you look at it), there's Grandmere to the rescue, and she's got a plan to help Mia's financial situation, social situation, and romantic situation all at once (not that Mia was aware she had a romantic "situation" in the first place). Unfortunately, Mia's romantic issues become all too clear when Michael decides to throw a party, and Mia starts freaking out because she's not a "party girl."

Fans of the previous PRINCESS DIARIES books won't want to miss this and will definitely enjoy reading along as Mia shares her crazy high school experiences through her journal. Meg Cabot's writing is light and breezy as always, and perfect for a lazy afternoon.

    Really good

If you love Meg Cabot you already know that all of her books are really great! Party Princess is no different! The only thing was that I was wishing that Michael and Mia would actually break up. I was really hoping that Mia and J.P would get together. I guess I need to face the fact that Michael and Mia will be together forever.

    Meg Cabot strikes back!

Once I saw this book in the library, I knew it had to be as good as the other books. And it was! It just as wonderful as the rest of the series. I thought it was filled with humor and romance. I especially loved the party about The Guy Who Hates It When They Put Corn In The Chilli turning out to be...wait, I shouldn't say. That'll ruin it for everyone else. All I will say is, you should definently read this book!

So, while this story explained a bit of Lilly's behavior, I don't think it excuses it. She's still really abrasive and downright mean to Mia.
That aside, I did love the book. The group of friends Mia has gains a new face. I love that Mia becomes braver and more accepting of people the more she matures in her role as princess. The relationship with Michael has a bit of a struggle again, but easily fixed in spite of Mia's overactive imagination. I enjoyed the fact that in her own twisted way, Grandmere was able to help Mia out of her school dilemma, even if it also helped herself out of her own dilemma. I'm excited to see what the next book has in store.
