In the world of motor-sports, challenges are often measured in miles. Whether it is the Daytona 500 or the IBA SaddleSore 1000, miles count. Miles are simple to measure and everyone can relate to them.

Alan and Tim’s ride has miles, so many in fact that the mere mention overshadows everything else. More than 23,000 miles in 48 days to the very far corners of the U.S.A. and Canada – many motorcyclists who have ridden around the world have traveled fewer.

But as impressive as they are, the miles covered are not what make this ride epic. It is the reach to the remote areas of Canada and Alaska. Their adventure takes them to places far removed from civilization, far away from any reasonable person's comfort zone. Alan is an 18 year cancer survivor. Losing a kidney to cancer when he was 42 was traumatic. However, he had no idea how it would change his life. It was through this event that he began to think about the fragility of life; how many people waited until they retired to “start living;” and how frequently they were not able to fulfill their dreams due to physical limitations.
A friend phrases it this way, “Are you living or waiting” – Are you living or are you waiting to die. After having cancer, I chose to live.
Alan had the privilege to be mentored by Dr. Mikel Harry, the co-creator of Six Sigma – the well-known business management system and was the technical editor for Dr. Harry’s latest work, The Great Discovery® – a process that creates breakthrough in everything you do. Working with Dr. Harry on this project provided Alan with tremendous insights, including insights into his own personal life.

    An Ultimate Iron Butt Ride Story

    If you're planning on riding the less common extreme Iron Butt Association motorcycle rides, reading the story of this journey is necessary preparation. If you're an armchair adventure motorcycle rider, it's a great read that details some aspects of long distance riding that aren't often discussed... personal conflicts, goals, daily disappointments and achievements, as well as explaining the personal drive that causes one to embark on such a journey. While it's not the story of a journey through Africa or an Iron Butt Rally; they detail a personal challenge ride for two persevering motorcyclists that decide to circumnavigate North America the uncommon way.
