Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
One usually think of stress as affecting older people not young students, but the boy pictured on the cover makes one realize that stress can occur at any age. The introductory material discusses what stress is and according to the author, "Knowing how to recognize and manage stress will help you lead a happier and healthier life." What are some of the more recognizable signs are described: you sweat, your head and stomach hurt, your muscles feel tense. Sometimes there are delayed reactions: sadness, loss of appetite, allergy and asthma attacks are good examples. There is an explanation of the flight or fight survival techniques that humans have developed and the stress responses that we still feel. All of the bolded words are further defined in the glossary should they not be clear within the context of the sentences. Not all stress is bad; sometimes we need that extra burst to help produce extra strength, for example in a sport; after the challenge is over the body returns to its normal mode. Long term stress is a different issue and it can cause harm. Next kids are introduced to skills to help them reduce stress and all of them are accompanied by illustrations. In addition to the already mentioned glossary there is a list of books and web sites for more information, an index and brief blurb about the author and a link to his web site. My only quibble with the list of books is the lack of publication dates for the cited books. The series would be quite useful in a classroom or school library and even a public library. Part of the "Slim Goodbody's Life Skills 101" series. Listed as Guided Reading "P." Reviewer: Marilyn Courtot
