Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Barbara L. Talcroft
Kids love art, but sometimes give it up as they get older and begin to encounter difficulties. Each of the books in the "Artist's Library" series offers sensible, usable advice from practicing artists to novices working in various media. Pastel painter Baggetta reminds readers that pastel is becoming a major medium for artists and recommends it to beginners for its flexibility and forgiving nature. She introduces young artists to hard and soft pastels, pastel sticks, and supports (various grades of paper), advising them to buy the very best they can afford. There is also helpful information about organizing a workspace and painting outdoors. Next, artists learn about values and the psychology of color, along with the many strokes possible with pastels (shown in color examples). After mastering these, pastel enthusiasts can follow Baggetta through six steps as she describes in detail (down to a list of colors she has used) a number of her finished works. Through each, she demonstrates an important technique like composing a landscape, showing depth, working with white, and conveying light and shadow. Especially interesting are lessons on creating and lighting a still life (here, a bowl of colorful fruit) and using photos as reference for composing a scene (white barn with trees) by combining and eliminating elements. Baggetta also steps painters through pastels of an animal (red fox), purple and white flowers, a self-portrait (working from a photo), and two less realistic works using brilliant color. Though the author's enthusiasm for pastel shines through, it is hard to imagine young artists absorbing this detailed 64 page course by themselves, but it could form the basis of an appealing curriculum in the use of pastels for art teachers in middle or high schools.
