Overview

In the land of Kodu Riik, it is an honor to be selected by the Lady to become an ahalad-kaaslane-to have your soul bonded with one of Her blessed animals, and roam the land serving Her will.

But Riesil refuses to bow to fate-a decision that may have repercussions across the realm...

Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
Abandoned Reisil has been trained as a tark: a healer. She is just starting to feel comfortable with her efforts, the village, and a possible lover. Then a black-and-white goshawk tries to attach herself to Reisil. Although the tark is emotionally taken with the large bird, she knows that the Blessed Lady has marked Reisil to be an ahalad-kaaslane: a leader who can have no homeland. Reisil tries repeatedly to avoid the goshawk and the mantle of leadership, but she is finally compelled to seek them out when a princess is kidnapped. Losing the royalty seriously jeopardizes the fragile truce between two lands, and Reisil is the only one uniquely equipped to rescue the princess-and peace. To succeed, she must face untold danger, and loss of her love. This well-plotted fantasy explores the illusions and inner truths of good and evil. Both males and females are well portrayed in the process. Clear writing and good character development make this a satisfying read. KLIATT Codes: SA-Recommended for senior high school students, advanced students, and adults. 2003, Penguin Putnam, Roc, 369p., Ages 15 to adult.

VOYA
Reisil is content to be a tark, a healer, repaying with her remedies and skill the town that raised her from an abandoned baby to young womanhood. The ahalad-kaaslane is the Blessed Lady's elite guard, each member bonded telepathically with a companion animal, keeping peace and justice throughout the land. Only truly special people are chosen to serve, and Reisil knows that she could not possibly ever be worthy. Her surprise and confusion is natural when a goshawk named Saljane calls to her to bond and become one of the Lady's own servants. Reisil would have preferred to refuse this gift, but when the Dure's daughter is kidnapped during a peace treaty council, her hand is forced. It is up to her and her companion to track and find the missing girl before civil war tears apart the land once more. This fairly standard fantasy adventure moves slowly at the beginning, as the stock character heroine (strong, unusual, eventually gifted with superhuman magical powers) equivocates between being a healer and becoming ahalad-kaaslane. The action picks up after the kidnapping, as Reisil is pulled into a web of deceit, betrayal, and dark wizardry. The novel is filled with imaginary language that is confusing in the beginning. In addition, when the author slips into mundane terms, such as treating ailments with laudanum, it does not ring authentic. Neverthless fans of Mercedes Lackey's Heralds of Valdemar series will find similarities and comparable enjoyment in this pleasant but unchallenging first novel. VOYA Codes 3Q 3P S A/YA (Readable without serious defects; Will appeal with pushing; Senior High, defined as grades 10 to 12; Adult-marketed book recommended for Young Adults). 2003, Roc, 369p.,pb. A Glorious Beginning

From the first I was drawn into the heart of the story, and dazzled by the brilliance of the world that Francis has created! The characters 'particularly the protagonist' are wonderfully rounded-out, and though there is a bit of predictabilty in the plot, there is much that is left open to question and chance. This was a fun and exciting read for me, and I suggest it to every lover of a good fantasy. Way to go Francis!

    Keep with it...

While it took a while to get into, Path of Fate really drew me in towards the middle. Don't give up on it.

    Bad!

This was not a good book. I think It took forever to actually get into it. I was not able to focus on the storyline because it was not really strong enough or entertaining. I had to force myself to try and finish it. I would not recommand this book. It is not worth your time!

Could not put the book down!!

When I began reading Path of Fate it was alright... but by the middle of the book I was drawn into it and had to finish it!! Literally I could not put it down. Towards the end of the book the action was the most intense and I kept wanting more and more until the end. ...Now that I see that there is a sequel I and definitely going out and buying it..

    I didn't like this book

This book was really bad. It was written very slowly and it was hard to follow. It didn't get into the actual story until 50 pages before the end. The author is, very descriptive, but slower. I think she could also stayed closer to the storyline.

    Wheres the second one?

I really liked the book. Its no epic of our times but it was still a lot of fun to read. The characters are interesting and likeable. But my only question is what happens next? There needs to be more...

This is one of my favorite books this new year

This book introduces a spunky new hero that is sure to capture even the most seasoned reader by suprise. It is never predictable and you'll find it very hard to put down. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves to see a normal girl achieve what no man ever could.

A new author pens a wonderful fantasy

Ever since she was a baby, abandoned by her mother all Reisil ever wanted was a place to call home. Growing up in Kallas, she was fostered to different families so that nobody would have to bear the burden of another mouth to feed for any extended periods. When Reisil is old enough, the village pays for her training as a healer and she hopes that they will want her to stay with them permanently.

Just when it looks like her dream will come true; the goshawk comes to bond with Reisil, choosing her to be one of the Lady¿s soldiers in the fight against evil. Reisil tries to avoid this dubious honor but when a noble woman from another country is kidnapped in Kallas and spirited away, Reisil accepts her destiny to find her. If she fails, the realm of Kudas will be plunged into war against an army that can use magic to cause terrible harm.

Very rarely does a writer¿s first novel come along that is so realistic and emotionally moving that it achieves total acclaim from reviewers and readers alike. PATH OF FATE will because of the strong protagonist who grows and changes to meet each situation that comes her way. She charms her way into the readers¿ hearts and the audience will adore the special relationship she has with Saljane the goshawk who has a winning and loveable personality of her own.

    Harriet Klausner
