This book was referred to me by a Benedictine Monk from St. Benedicts Abbey in Atchison, KS. My wife and I were becomming oblates at the Abbey, and it was required reading. I already had enough on my plate so I wasn't thrilled at the assigned reading, but I gave it a go. Couldn't. Put it. Down. The Chapters on Obedience and Humility are Par Excellance! And the way he describes prayer is phenomenal. Very visual, and very much touching on struggles EVERYONE faces in their day to day spiritual life. While he does touch on more Catholic issues like the Eucharist, the approach he takes really could work for most denomenations without sounding too overtly Catholic (no more than reading a book about applying the monastic rule to our secular lives could anyway). This book has, more than almost any other book on spiritual formation, helped me in my walk with God. It's had a dramatic effect on my prayer life, and the way I deal with others. I cannot recommend this book highly enough - especially to a world infatuated with books like 'A Purpose Driven life'. This is a real breath of fresh air - it takes a more mature and time-tested approach to spirituality, and it works. Buy it. Now.Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
