When Alice TodHunter Moon was five years old, she saw a beautiful golden Dragon Boat fly over her PathFinder village. She knew at once that the boat was Magykal.

That was years ago, before her mother died, her father disappeared at sea, and the Garmin took her best friend, Ferdie.

Now it's up to Tod and Ferdie's brother Oskar to rescue Ferdie from the Garmins' keeper, the malevolent Lady. Their journey takes them to the Castle, where they receive help from ExtraOrdinary Wizard Septimus Heap and ex–ExtraOrdinary Wizard Marcia Overstrand.

But the Lady's brother, the Darke sorcerer Oraton-Marr, has a plan that will put everyone Tod holds dear in danger. To save her people, Tod must embrace her identity as a PathFinder and navigate the Ancient Ways, mysterious Magykal paths leading to unfamiliar—and sometimes dangerous—lands.

Taking place seven years after the story arc of the original bestselling Septimus Heap series, PathFinder celebrates the joy of discovering one's own personal Magyk and of choosing the path that lets that Magyk flourish and grow.

Editorial Reviews

VOYA, August 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 3) - Mary Ann Darby
Alice TodHunter Moon is feeling lost and confused—her mother has died, her father has vanished, and horrible creatures are snatching up villagers and chasing her. Seven years after the final installment of Septimus Heap, Tod lives in a village of PathFinders, and just after her father has started to reveal the secrets long held by the PathFinder people (the Sarns, Moons, and Starrs), he disappears. When her best friend, Ferdie, is taken by the hideous creatures known as Garmin, Tod and Ferdie’s brother, Oskie, decide they must find her. Finding themselves in peril, two kindhearted people, who turn out to be Snorri and Nicko Heap, rescue them, and after Ferdie is rescued, Tod’s journey continues to the Castle and the Wizard’s Tower. There she learns that she has strong Magykal powers and is introduced to the new ExtraOrdinary Wizard Septimus Heap, the indubitable Marcia Overstreet, and a host of other Heaps. As dangers and intrigue pile high, Tod must embrace her own brand of Magyk as well as her PathFinder skills to help save those she loves. Sage returns middle and junior high readers to both new and familiar parts of the Magykal world, once again masterfully blending suspense, humor, and engaging characters in her tale. Tod is a terrific female protagonist, full of uncertainty and untested strengths. She receives reassurances from Snorri that “life is like a sea passage . . . you sail your boat the best you can, but sometimes there is a storm. All you can do is to keep a steady hand on the tiller and hope for better weather.” And steady Tod stays, learning to trust herself and her emerging talents. This starts a series that graduates of Septimus Heap, as well as readers looking for an engaging new series, will love. Reviewer: Mary Ann Darby; Ages 11 to 15.
Kirkus Reviews
With the help of ExtraOrdinary Wizard Septimus Heap, 12-year-old Alice TodHunter "Tod" Moon must learn to navigate the Ancient Ways of the PathFinder in order to find her missing father and save her people. Armed with the PathFinder, a Magykal compass, Tod must rescue her friend, Ferdie, from the evil Lady, find her missing father, and do what she can to defeat Darke Sorcerer Oraton-Marr. However, she quickly realizes that saving the world is not a one-person job; she will need the help of friends, family and some very Magykal people if she is to succeed in her quest. Thankfully, what she lacks in experience she makes up for in bravery and loyalty. Filled with Magykal spells, mysterious artifacts and strange creatures, Tod's adventure is set seven years after the original Septimus Heap series and is both a reunion with familiar characters and an introduction to new ones. Humorous banter, genuine friendships, and distinctive, well-realized settings elevate this story above others of its genre. Readers unfamiliar with the original series may find themselves lost at times, but the strength of Sage's storytelling will carry them through. Zug's black-and-white drawings accompany the text. An exciting reunion with a favorite series. (Fantasy. 8-12)
ALA Booklist
“The writing, as always, is seamless, warm, and inventive, and angsty moments are balanced by reassurances, making it appropriate for a younger-than-usual Heap audience.”
School Library Journal
Gr 5 Up—This companion to the series set seven years later, tells the story of Pathfinder Alice TodHunter Moon (Tod). It opens with her first MidSummer Circle, when the 12-year-old and the other Pathfinders of age revel in their legacy—a story told by Dan, Tod's father and leader of the Pathfinders. Tragedy soon follows when he disappears while fishing, and she is forced to live with her wicked Aunt Mitza, who soon plans to get rid of Tod. Luckily, her friend Oskar alerts her and helps her escape, which is when the real adventure begins. A dizzying number of characters brings this tale across its 12 parts. Kidnappings, Darke Magyk, secret passages, sailing ships, message rats, and creatures of all sorts pack the pages, taking readers along. Not surprisingly, all of the characters meet up by means of hubs that slip time and space and reveal Tod's purpose. Fans of the first series will certainly delight as characters familiar and new go on new adventures and reveal new mythologies.—Stacy Dillon, LREI, New York City

I do not see how this story will differ from the original story arc. Plot: A tween-aged, seemingly orphaned, child, meets people with Magykal skill. Their eyes are slowly opened to a new world, while a fairly unsuccessful takeover of their homeland drags on for months. The Magykal person whom they rely on most is separated from them and the kid and their two companions are left to make their own ending. In the end, the child is highly Magykally talented, has a fully or partially intact family, and becomes the new ExtraOrdinary Apprentice. Returning characters are what make it worthwhile, if only to see where they have gone. Yes, the sequel can never quite measure up... This is a prime example of such a sequel. ( However, a PREQUEL? Now I would like to see that happen.)

This book brought me mixed feelings While i liked the Septimus Heap.series and this was also an enjoiable series as well it just seemed like it was made for the money and she just slapped another story and wuala Also ---SPOILERS---- the ending didnt even make sense, in Magyk it was a huge deal all the apprentice of an extraordinary wizard and stuff and in this one Todd doesnt even show huge magykal skills like septimus in magyk and still she is the new apprentice "sigh" i guess its just a cheap copy of Magyk with almost the same ending
