    Awesome!!!

For the faithful who have awaited the release of this book, the wait has been worth it. This book is beautifully illustrated, huge, and well organized. Though another companies book may bear the name, D&D's heart beats within the pages of this book. Races and Classes have been updated, made more powerful and more flexible. Skills have been streamlined and made easier to manage. Grapple, Bull Rush, Trip?? Easier to manage and understand. There are too many things to mention, but this book is a must buy for D&D fans, especially 3 or 3.5 fans. The only problem? Deciding which class to play!

    I Also Recommend:

Beautiful Book and a Great Value!

I completely agree with everything the first review said. I want to add that this book is both a player's handbook AND the DM guide! That means you get both for one price and everything is all together in one book! The beta version was play-tested by millions of people and Paizo incorporated many house rules into this Core book. They did an amazing job! Isn't it nice when companies listen to their customers and fans?

    I Also Recommend:

All those 3.0 and 3.5 edition D&D books on your shelf don't have to be replaced! D&D 3.5 thrives with Pathfinder!

It's backwards-compatible with all of your D&D 3.5 material, so you don't have to shell out $1,000 more to play a new version of your favorite game. At the same time, it breathes new life into the greatest RPG ever made, by expanding the core classes and races and simplifying many of the skills and combat rules. I read the D&D 4th edition Player's Handbook, and this is the best anology I can come up with: D&D 3.5 is like Legos, D&D 4th edition is like Transformers. For those of us who aren't keen on dumbing our games down, this is for us, and I look forward to much more from Paizo and Pathfinder.

For anyone who loved 3.5 Edition D&D...

Both as a player and as a Game Master I love this system. The Core Rulebook is a combination of Player's Guide and Dungeon Master's Guide all in one. The layout and artwork is beautiful, and a pleasure to leaf through.

The updated rules from Paizo are well written, thought out, and are what I consider to be a major improvement to the system.

The classes are all worth following up through level 20, with new talents and abilities for Barbarians, rogues and fighters. There is a section on encounter designing, tables for random encounters in different terrain/weather, as well as the epic amounts of magic items!

    Over all... worth every penny!

    Fails to match its hype

While it has some nice concepts, it simply does not fulfill its promise of being backwards compatible with the 3.5 fantasy rules. While that could be overlooked to some extent, it also fails to meet the standards of qualifying as "cutting edge", being instead not much more than the SRD sprinkled with house rules.
The book is certainly reasonably attractive, albeit quite heavy, and certainly comprehensive, though that makes searching it a bit of a task, but it just is not a grand achievement over a shelf of existing 3.5 products.
If you really need a hardcopy for tabletop use, you will wind up needing one. Otherwise stick with your 3.5 books, and just scan the Pathfinder SRD for any salvageable ideas.

Great Game, Easy to understand rules, real depth of play

Pathfinder is a Role Playing Game derived from the 3.5 Open Gaming License edition of the Dungeons and Dragons game. While very very similar this book contains a wealth of lore and information under one cover to play the game. To get involved in local organized play or your own gaming group you need only this book!

The publisher Paizo has also kept the information current and constantly produces additional books to add even more content to the gaming system.

If you used to table top RPG's this is great fun. If your new to the genre, this single book opens up an entire new hobby for you...
