Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introductory book on orthopedic pathology, correlating basic science and clinical orthopedics with the associated histology and radiographic features.
Audience: The appropriate audience is orthopedists, pathologists, and radiologists who are interested in bone disease and its associated clinical, histological, and radiological correlations. It would be especially helpful as an introductory, yet comprehensive, resource for residents in these fields.
Features: The book successfully integrates the orthopedic, histological, and radiological features of the spectrum of bone and joint diseases to include anatomy, physiology, fractures, metabolic and genetic bone diseases, infections, and benign and malignant tumors. Interesting chapters address the pathology of failed total joint arthroplasty and the management of orthopedic pathology specimens from the operating room to the microscope.
Assessment: The authors state that this introduction to orthopedic pathology contains the minimum information that residents in pathology and orthopedic surgery should know by the completion of their training. However, it is rather comprehensive and contains much more information than the average orthopedic resident attains by the end of residency. As a result, it also would serve as a helpful resource for those already in practice. The book is easy to read, is well illustrated and referenced, and would be a great asset to residents on the orthopedic oncology service and those studying for the annual in-training exam (OITE) or Part I of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS) exam. Its multidisciplinary approach provides a unique perspective, giving readers a more thorough and global understanding of disease processes. It is especially valuable in light of the fact that few orthopedic books address many of the topics this book does.

This textbook is devoted to the introduction of orthopedic pathology. It includes 18 chapters written jointly by a pathologist and an orthopedic surgeon who have drawn on their daily practice and in-service course in bone pathology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The purpose is to serve as an introduction and core knowledge of orthopedic pathology for residents of pathology and orthopedic surgery. The audience is primarily trainees in pathology and orthopedic surgery. This book provides a concise body of orthopedic pathology to the beginner. It could easily form the basic fund of knowledge for all such trainees. The radiological tutorial is quite good and complements the pathologic descriptions and approaches to diagnosis. Chapters on inflammation, repair, and metabolic bone disorders provide straight forward criteria for the diagnosis of osteomyelitis, failed arthroplasty, and arthritis. Oftentimes the pathologist is confronted with a multitude of bones and bone pieces during his daily practice of pathology. Oftentimes important clinical inferences are missed or not given so that the pathological keyword in a surgical report falls short of a specific diagnosis. The use of a multidisciplinary approach is to be applauded: it will help pathologists diagnose specific bone pathology if a clearer understanding of radiological information is used during the evaluation; and orthopedists will better understand the surgical pathology reports they receive. I do not know of any other text that provides this much concise information. I would recommend this text to all orthopedic and pathology trainees.
