500 USMLE-type questions and answers!

"This book is a wonderful resource for second year medical students taking pathology as well as medical students in their clinical years. It is a good review and highly relevant to what I am seeing in the hospital." -- Sheree Perron, Third Year Medical Student, Eastern Virginia Medical School

The pictures that accompanied several of the questions were very clear, and represented what students are likely to see on the actual exam." -- Jodie Bachman, Third Year Medical Student, UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine

Editorial Reviews

Reviewer: Steven Tenny, BS(University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: The 13th edition of this pathology review provides 500 review questions with answers and explanations, separated by subject, covering some of the basics taught at the start of medical school and tested on the USMLE Step 1 examination. This is an update to the 2007 edition.
Purpose: This book reviews important information about many diseases and stimulates further learning of the subject from other resources. Like other review books, it is needed to help medical students assess and deepen their knowledge and understanding prior to exams.
Audience: This is written for medical students in their first years of study. Dr. Earl J Brown has authored multiple well-received books and writes well for his audience here.
Features: The review uses a question-answer format, presenting multiple-choice questions on a topic, followed by answers and explanations as well as citations with page numbers to sources for more information. Most questions reference Robbins and Cotran Pathologic Basis of Disease, 8th edition, Kumar et al. (Elsevier, 2010). The book also has 40 pages of rapid review bullet points to remind students of associations and facts tested in medical pathology exams. The few black-and-white images are rarely needed to answer the question correctly. Many questions use classic presentations and descriptions of diseases with some buzzwords not found on USMLE Step 1.
Assessment: This book does what its title states — provides a tool for medical students to assess their knowledge of pathology and review many pathologies before exams. It is on a par with other pathology question books, covering many pathologies, omitting some, mentioning buzzwords, and providing explanations. Choosing this review book over others is mostly a matter of personal preference for format. The 13th edition has some changes from the 12th edition, but some top learners may argue that the questions are not challenging enough.
