Editorial Reviews

Joyce Young Johnson
This text updates the third edition published in 1992. The book is organized using conceptual and systems approaches to enhance students' understanding of the impact that adaptations in physiology have on the body as a whole. The purpose is to help the student understand the often-difficult concepts related to pathophysiologic conditions and the effects on the entire body. Additionally, the text is designed to provide the student opportunities to apply the concepts of pathophysiology to patient situations to facilitate knowledge acquisition. The authors indicate that the book was written for undergraduate and graduate students in nursing and other health disciplines. The ideal audience for this text is the BSN-level nursing student who requires an overview of basic concepts without the in-depth discussion of cellular level pathology often included in graduate texts. The book is well illustrated with a liberal supply of tables, charts, and drawings to emphasize key information and describe important processes. The case studies and computer disk containing questions related to the content allow the student opportunities to apply concepts to patient situations. This very good text is useful for teaching and learning pathophysiology, particularly for undergraduate students. The new edition provides updated information with the integration of new knowledge in the areas of genetics and cancer, warranting the replacement of previous editions.
