Purpose: The authors explore the ways in which the various cells, tissues, and organs suffer within the human body, providing a comprehensive overview of pathophysiology. The authors hope readers will realize that the conceptual models used in the book relate not only to the suffering of cells, tissues, and organ systems but also of human beings — there is a person on the receiving end of all that suffering or pathology. The revisions in this edition make it a valuable and comprehensive resource.
Audience: Although not specifically stated, the book is designed for college-level healthcare programs, but anyone interested in the pathophysiology of the human body would benefit from reading this well-written and logically organized book.
Features: The book is organized into two parts. Part one covers the central concepts of pathophysiology of cells and tissues or the cellular environment. The 13 chapters in this part cover cellular biology, altered cellular and tissue biology, the cellular environment, genes and genetic diseases, immunity, infection and cancer. Part two deals with the suffering or pathophysiology within each organ system and the interaction that can occur with multiple organ system failure. Each organ system is easily identifiable by the index color coding at the top of the fore edge of the page. There are 11 units in this part, made up of chapters 14-46. Each organ system discussion includes the male and female anatomy of the system if there are differences, alterations in those systems, and alterations specific for children. The book includes numerous full color artist conceptions, color and black-and-white photographs, tables, figures, a 22-page glossary and hypertext links to online resources. The online resource provides a more comprehensive glossary and multimedia content.
Assessment: This updated edition is well written and logically organized and can go toe-to-toe with any other pathophysiology textbook. This is an excellent choice for healthcare students and would provide a worthy resource for public, college, and university libraries as well.
