Editorial Reviews

Mary Bennett
This second edition textbook is divided into 15 units organized into eight major sections. Pathophysiological processes are described as alterations in homeostasis of major body functions. Basic information on alterations in homeostasis serves as an introduction, including the effect of sociocultural influences and contributions of stress, adaptation, and coping on disease and disease progression. The purpose is to address not only physiological mechanisms of disease, but also the role of behavioral factors, lifestyle choices, and external environments. Factors related to gender, aging, lifestyle, and nutrition are integrated throughout the text. This book is useful for nursing students and students in other health professions courses. The inside cover has a list of relevant websites for each major section of the text. A color bar for each section divides the book visually, making it easy to go to a given section. Changes due to aging are highlighted in boxes for easy reference. In addition, each unit begins with a ""Frontiers of Research"" section, making it easy to integrate research. At the end of every major topic key concepts are outlined in bulleted text boxes. An instructor's manual with test bank questions and a sample comprehensive exam accompany the text. In addition, a CD-ROM including lecture slides and color images from the text is available. While this textbook is not quite as comprehensive as some, the basics are well covered and links to the Internet give students the option of obtaining further information. This textbook has some very nice features and excellent graphical representation of complex processes such as activation of complement and immune cellactivation. The authors do a nice job integrating research, lifespan, gender, and cultural factors within the framework of alterations in homeostasis.
