Meet the Author

JAMES LAWRENCE POWELL is president and director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. He is the former president of the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, Reed College, and Franklin and Marshall College. Powell is a presidential appointee to the National Science Board, a position he has held since 1986.
